Sam picks the perfect pumpkin

Posted in Sam Talk by Mike on October 26th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Sam and I went to the pumpkin patch today to pick out a pumpkin.  He was pretty excited.  We had a fun time.  Here’s the video.

UPDATE: I found out how to embed the high quality youtube videos, so this is the high quality version. Enjoy!

Is it the next month?

Posted in Uncategorized by Cindy on October 3rd, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I can’t believe it….we went one whole month without a post. And so much has happened in that month! I tried to talk Mike into writing something witty on September 30th, so we didn’t skip a month, to no avail. So here goes….Maggie turned ONE!  She’s awesome! We had lots of fun celebrating her day…we celebrated for a week!  Mike’s mom and dad came in town for her official party. She is walking behind her baby stroller, “talking” up a storm, and always smiling. She’s still a little feisty in her old age…wonder where she gets that from?

Mike and his dad were able to go to the Bears/Colts game at the new stadium…talk about an awesome place! They were both in heaven - the Bears won!

Mike was in Chicago for an extended week for the last weeks of the international swap for the summer. He had a lot of fun…we can’t believe he graduates in less than 6 months! I’m already planning his graduation weekend in the Windy City! WooHoo! Can’t wait!

Sam is doing great - after a brief two weeks of not wanting to go to Preschool (crying when I pull in the parking lot and saying, “Mommy, go back home, I need a ban-baid because I have a new boo-boo!”) to ASKING to go to school the minute he wakes up! How quickly thing change. He has learned so many new things and even made an apple pie in class! Next week, he goes on his first field trip to the pumpkin patch! Maggie and I get to tag along too! Later this month, he’ll take his pumpkin and his daddy to “Dads and Pumpkins Night!” Mike is pumped about that one!

I am getting geared up for the big 10-year reunion at WKU! Yep, 10 years folks. Scary. What’s even scarier is that it means it has been 14 years since high school graduation. I’m meeting up with some of the KD girls, going to the alumni tea, and then tailgating at the game. (New outfit for me, you know, because below the Mason Dixon Line, you dress up for the game. hmmmmm)  That evening we’re doing a ladies dinner at a little restaurant in the Square. Should be fun…I’m so looking forward to seeing everyone!

We went to the apple orchard to pick apples and play. The kids had a great time…the weather was just beautiful!

We’re working on Maggie and Sam’s costumes for Halloween…well, poor Mags - she gets a hand-me-down - from her brother! She’s going to be a bumblebee - the cutest little bee ever! And Sam, well, he asked to be an iPod. Ok, so off to Michael’s I went. Glad I went last week, because I think this one will take awhile to create!

Here are some pictures of the last month! Enjoy…happy Fall!

So busy…

Posted in Uncategorized by Cindy on August 26th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

It’s been so long since we’ve posted anything…..we’re still waiting on Mike to finish his London trip blog….and yes, he’s home! We had a wonderful time in London together! We had lunch and dinner together every night, in between Mike’s classes. We went to the theater, shopped, ate and drank! The highlight was experiencing Mr. Van Morrison in concert. It was an outdoor concert, so we brought winter coats and a picnic. I brought wine, cheese, and bread from my excursion to Paris…it was yummy!  I really enjoyed Paris with my college and after-college roomie,  Amy C. Jones. Here is a picture from our boat cruise on the Sienne River in Paris. Yes, we’re pimping for a spot in the WKU Alumni magazine.

Sam is doing great…he had “Meet the Teacher” day today and loved being back at “his school.” It took a minute to understand that he was going to be in a different room, with different teachers. After 5 minutes of being there, he loved it! Yippee! Maggie, oh, Miss Maggie. She’s a highly energetic little girl! And she’s going to be one-year-old on Sunday! We cannot believe it…the time has gone by so much faster than Sam’s first year. Why is that?!  She’s all over everything and will be walking soon. She loves to eat and laugh! Sometimes at the same time.

London Day 1: The tube

Posted in MBA by Mike on August 10th, 2008 at 6:57 am

Decided to go for a walk and explore.  St Paul’s is just outside my hotel door, so I walked over to see if I could get in.  There was a long line of tourists, and it’s a bit rainy.  So I decided to keep walking.  I found a tube station and jumped on the Central line over to Oxford Circus.  They call it Central, but it’s the red line to me. Chicago’s lines are all colors, and every line here has a color, but the they also have names and apparently go by the names.

Wow, lots of people.  This is the shopping area, kind of like Michigan Ave, but with lots of stores on the side streets as well.  Everyone is bumping everyone else with their umbrellas.

I found an electronics store and bought the right power adapter, as I brought the wrong one with me.  Now I can properly run my laptop.  Talked to a guy about a SIM card for my phone, but my phone is not unlocked, so that would not work.  He wanted to sell me a new one for £10, but I declined.

I bought a couple of long sleeve shirts, as I only brought one, and no jacket.  It’s supposed to be rainy and high 60’s all week, so I don’t know why I did not bring the right clothes.  At least Cindy packed me an umbrella.

I took a nap from 5pm to 7:30pm.  I was extremely tired.  Got up, wandered around for food and found most places were closed.  What?  It’s Saturday night.  Then I realized I’m in an area of town that is more business than nightlife, hence everything being closed.  I did find a pizza place and had a small pepperoni pizza and some tiramisu.  I haven’t managed to have a proper beer since I’ve been here.

BTW, I love the words used so common here that we rarely hear in the US, like rubbish, cheeky, etc.  Finally fell asleep at 3am.

London Day 0-1: Flight and arrival

Posted in MBA by Mike on August 9th, 2008 at 7:27 am

I flew out of Indy at about 7:15pm Friday night, via Washington Dulles, and arrived at London Heathrow at about 9:45am.  Called to have a chauffeur pick me up as it was cheaper than a taxi and because the tube can get a little crazy with a big piece of luggage.  Still cost $80 US (vs $140 for taxi.)  Exchange rate now is $2 to 1 pound.  Ride was 45 minutes to my hotel.  Nice Benz.  Quiet driver.  I did manage to sleep on the flight a bit, but I’m tired.  Time is 5 hours ahead of Indy/NY here.

I got to the Club Quarters hotel around 11am or so and thought there would be no chance to check-in, but sure enough, they had a room for me.  Friendly chaps.  About the same as the Club Quarters in Chicago, which means small, clean and functional.  That’s fine for me, as I’m not too picky as long as it is clean.  I’m going to shower and then explore.  When I look out my window I see St Paul’s Cathedral.  That’s where Diana and Charles were married, where they had Churchill’s funeral, etc.  Pretty neat.

Kick and scoop - in the pool together!

Posted in Uncategorized by Cindy on August 3rd, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Sam and Maggie had a great time this weekend…they both love their “swimmy school” and probably will be sad when our classes end this week. Sam has been learning how to kick, “scoop,” blow bubbles, jump off the side, etc. etc. Maggie and I do her class together - we just kick and splash! And sing “Wheels on the bus” several times over! They love the water - thank goodness! :)

Fair, Pizza Train, and the pool

Posted in Uncategorized by Cindy on July 20th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

We had a busy weekend! Friday evening, we took the kids to the Hamilton County Fair - small, but so managable. Sam and Maggie loved the animals and Mike and I enjoyed the lamb BBQ and sirloin sandwiches. (Not together - two different sandwiches!) It was probably the hottest afternoon of the year, but we had fun. Sam loved when the roosters “cock-a-doodle-dooed!” He was a little skidish of the bigger animals at first. He loved the little guys in cages!

Saturday night, we took the “Pizza Train” to Pizza King. (This was especially cool, because Mike had been craving pizza ever since he returned home from Singapore. Apparently, they don’t have pizza there.) We boarded the train in Noblesville, rode 45 minutes north, got off, boarded a school bus (the highlight of the trip for Sam), rode 5 minutes down the road (did you know school buses do not have air conditioning?), arrived at Pizza King (my brother used to be a delivery guy there in high school), ate at a $10 pizza buffet, got back on the bus, got back on the train, and arrived back at the station. All in all, it was great fun - but as Mike put it, “a lot of effort for pizza!” Sam had a great time - we enjoyed catching up with Erik, Rita, and their son Jack (and soon to be baby boy Maverick, arriving 8/15).

Sunday, we went to the YMCA for some swimming….Sam loved jumping in the deep end with Mike, and Maggie was a crazy girl in the wading pool. I put her down for some “splashing,” but within 3.2 seconds, she was off and crawling into the 3 inch water. Ah! I can’t keep my eyes off her! We call her our little thrill seeker. Hmmm…wonder where she gets that from??

Her toofers finally popped through, but alas, there are more coming. She still loves to eat, drink, and be merry! We cannot believe she will be one soon!

Road trip to Nana and Poppy’s house

Posted in Uncategorized by Cindy on July 20th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

While Mike was away, my mom, Sam, Maggie and I took a road trip to see Mike’s mom and dad. It was so much fun - we had lots of laughs! And the kids LOVED seeing their Nana and Poppy! Sam loved Dave’s garage, Dave’s tools, and their pool. He also enjoyed placing Dave’s magnifying glass in the VCR. Maggie loved exploring everything in their house. We took the kids to Dollywood, to the park, and out for dinner. Aunt Nicole and Uncle Chris came to visit the kids several times while we were there. It was wonderful to see everyone…..we’ll see the Barnett family again in August for Maggie’s birthday.
